Undergraduate Research Assistant in Zhao Research Group

Undergraduate Research Assistant in Zhao Research Group

We are currently seeking a paid research assistant to join our ongoing research project starting this summer. The project focuses on designing a robot (body + touchscreen interface) and companion app to support caregiving for individuals living with Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias. The ideal candidate would be willing to participate in the research for at least the entirety of the next academic year, with the potential for involvement in the following year. We have allocated funds to support the project’s duration, offering a rate of $15 per hour.

As a research assistant, you will collaborate closely with faculty members in the fields of graphic design and engineering, as well as students specializing in graphic design, computer science, and engineering. It will be essential for you to complete IRB training/certification, enabling you to facilitate user testing and engage in focus groups (approximately 5 hours of training). Our research directly involves individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia, as well as their caregivers. Therefore, the work requires a high level of sensitivity and emotional awareness, but it is also immensely fulfilling. Effective public speaking skills are necessary to engage with our audience.

We are specifically seeking candidates with the following skills:

For Engineering

  • Experience and proficiency in 3D modeling, building, and printing
  • Interest in user testing and research

For Computer Science

  • Experience in AI and coding
  • Familiarity with Raspberry Pi computers
  • Interest in user testing and research

If you possess these skills and are passionate about contributing to this important research endeavor, we encourage you to apply. Your involvement will provide valuable insights and make a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Please let us know if you have any further questions or require additional information. We look forward to receiving your application.

Please send any inquiries or applications (resume and a brief summary of relevant skills and experience) to Prof. Xiaopeng Zhao (xzhao9@utk.edu). The position will begin early summer and onboarding can happen as soon as you’re available after finals.
