Machine Reading Comprehension Could Improve Medical Visits, Experience
A project involving EECS Department Head Greg Peterson, joint Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) faculty member Edmon Begoli, and doctoral student Maria Mahbub aims to improve machine reading comprehension for medical visits, using computer-assisted “reading comprehension” to help machines quickly scan medical documents and extract critical data.
Candy Coding: NICS’ MARVEL Facilitates Mars Food Research
For the past six years, UT’s National Institute for Computational Sciences (NICS) has collaborated with food company Mars Inc., resulting with the creation of MARVEL, the Mars Advanced Research Virtual Environment Lab. MARVEL provides a meeting place where NICS and UT researchers can interact with Mars scientists and facilitate their research.

I’m proud to share that work within our oneAPI Center of Excellence, a collaboration between Intel and the University of Tennessee, has made a student-created rendering service a reality. Typically, high-end visualization is heavy-weight, cumbersome to deploy, and expensive to use. The Center’s objective was to build high-end visualization as a service that can be instantly available and universally accessible to students.
