IT Administrator II – Electrical Engineering & Computer Science

Regular Full-time, Pay Grade 40

The University of Tennessee’s Min H. Kao Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) is seeking to hire an IT Administrator.

The IT Administrator II will be a member of the EECS department’s IT staff as well as the Tickle College of Engineering IT Staff Council. This position is responsible for administering the Microsoft Windows servers and workstations in the EECS department. Under the supervision of senior staff, the administrator installs, configures, maintains, and secures departmental services including, but not limited to, configuration management via Active Directory Group Policy, remote desktop and virtual desktop infrastructure services, and Hyper-V virtualization. The administrator is responsible for troubleshooting hardware, operating system, networking, security, and application software issues. They develop procedures to automate routine system administration tasks such as OS/application deployment and patching. Additionally, they advise EECS faculty, students, and staff on IT related questions and problems. The EECS IT help desk staff relies on this position to provide level II support for Microsoft Windows. Independent thinking and decision-making are essential in this position.

Job Responsibilities Include

  • Administering desktop and server systems to support departmental operations, research, and teaching
  • Maintaining and testing installation procedures and configuration settings for Windows desktop and server systems
  • Monitoring systems for health, availability, and security status
  • Analyzing and designing complex engineering software environments for Windows operating systems
  • Monitoring of EECS IT help desk tickets to ensure timely and accurate responses
  • Training of EECS IT help desk and IT administrators
  • Advising faculty, students, and staff on IT related questions and problems

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or other related scientific and/or engineering discipline
  • Five years of system administration experience with recent versions of Windows Server
  • In-depth knowledge of PC-based computer hardware and software
  • Knowledge of computer operating systems concepts such as kernels, compilers, and shared libraries
  • Knowledge of computer security principles and best practices
  • Knowledge of computer science concepts such as data structures and algorithms
  • Knowledge of virtualization technologies such as Microsoft Hyper-V, Azure Virtualization, or VMWare
  • Skills in Windows system administration procedures and practices including configuring and securing workstation and server systems
  • Skills in a scripting language such as PowerShell, Bash, Perl, or Python
  • Skills in configuration management using Microsoft Active Directory Group Policy
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to train others in IT-related tasks and procedures
  • Ability to learn new IT systems and processes and stay current on IT related best practices and security requirements
  • Due to work with export controlled systems and the Secure Enclave, the successful candidate must be a U. S. citizen or resident alien with a green card.

Desired Qualifications

  • Certification in Microsoft technologies such as MCSE or newer role-based certification
  • Certification in computer security such as Security+
  • One year of experience with cloud computing services (e.g. AWS, Google Cloud)
