Welcome
Welcome to the web site for the Min H. Kao Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). We are a new department, formed on July 1, 2007 with the merger of the Computer Science Department and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, but still a department with a long distinguished history. We offer three academic programs: Electrical Engineering; Computer Engineering; and Computer Science. Each program provides degrees at the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. levels.
This is an exciting time for us with many changes for the existing programs and new opportunities for expanding our mission. Appropriately for a newly formed department, we eagerly await construction of the new EECS building. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the Min Kao Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building were held on May 14, 2007. The building construction should be completed in late 2010. Upon completion almost all departmental activities will be housed in the new building. We are particularly grateful to Dr. Min Kao, CEO of Garmin, LTD., an alumnus of the old Electrical Engineering department, for his donation of funding for the building and other departmental support, and the confidence he has shown in our vision for EECS.
While we are a merged department, some activities will remain separate for several months. For example the Computer Science, Computer Engineering, and Electrical Engineering curricula have not yet been changed to reflect the merger. Thus, the Computer Science programs will remain in the College of Arts and Sciences until Fall 2008, when revised Computer Science B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. programs will be moved into the College of Engineering. Revisions to the Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering programs are also expected at that time.
We hope you are excited as we are about new directions for our programs and will seriously consider the educational and research opportunities the department offers.
