Using Electrocon CAPE

The academic version of Electrocon CAPE is available for use in the Tesla (Min Kao 418) laboratory. This page explains how to get CAPE to work on our systems and how to keep your CAPE data safe.

Using CAPE for the First Time

The following instructions will explain how to create your personal CAPE database the first time you use CAPE on an EECS system. You will have to take the following steps every time you use CAPE on a system you have not used before or if your user profile has been deleted.

  1. Open C:\cape\Cape.reg file and add it to your registry.
  2. Start the CAPE Database Editor. You can immediately close it again.
  3. Start the CAPE Executive.

Creating Your CAPE Database

All your work in CAPE needs to be stored in a Firebird database. The first time you use CAPE, create a new database and save it to your Documents folder on the system's C: drive. You will later move this database to your H: drive for backup.

  1. Start the CAPE Executive
  2. Select "Create New Database and Drawing..." from the File menu.
  3. Click the "?" symbol under Target DB.
  4. Navigate to Documents and save the new database giving it a name you like.

Saving and Re-Using Your Database

After you have finished with CAPE, copy your database file to your H: T-Storage drive.
The next time you use CAPE, copy your database from your H: T-Storage drive back to your Documents folder.

  1. Start CAPE and select "Attach Database" from the File menu.
  2. Select "Open File Dialog..." and select your database from the Documents folder.

Important Notes

While the CAPE database has to be running from the computer's hard drive, please remember that your user files on the Tesla lab are not a safe place to store your data. The systems can be re-installed without notice and they are not backed up. This is why you must copy your CAPE database to your H: drive after every use. Alternatively, you can use a USB flash drive or other network drive to back up your database.
