EF Undergraduate Teaching Assistant

The Engineering Fundamentals Department is offering several immediate undergraduate teaching assistant (TA) positions for Fall 2008 and Spring 2009. The work involves assisting the graduate TAs in teaching and helping students taking EF 105. A typical work load is 10 hours/week, for which $9/hour will be paid.

The schedule for EF 105 in the fall will be the following:
Monday: 9:05-10:55, 12:20-2:15, 2:30-4:25, 4:40-6:35
Tuesday: 3:40-5:35,
Wednesday: 9:05-10:55, 12:20-2:15, 2:30-4:25, 4:40-6:35
Thursday: 3:40-5:25
Friday: 9:05-10:55, 12:20-2:15, 2:30-4:25.

Qualified applicants should be available for at least 4 of the above sessions, including either the Monday or Friday morning sessions.

Federal Opportunity for Engineering and Computer Science/IT Majors

The Washington Center is pleased to announce an opportunity for students to participate in a fully-funded (plus stipend) internship program with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Selected students will have the opportunity to intern for FAA offices and participate in an experiential training program. Student participants will gain relevant skills and knowledge, explore career options within the Department of Transportation and other federal agencies, and develop a greater awareness of the role of the federal government. Internship sites for the fall 2009 semester are in Washington, D.C.

Qualifications

Be a currently enrolled student in an accredited college or university
Be of junior status or above (60 academic credit hours) at the time of the internship
Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
Be a U.S. citizen
Complete all components of the application packet
All students who meet these criteria are eligible to apply; however, Native American and Asian American students, as well as students with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply

Compensation

Selected students will receive The Washington Center program fee and housing fee at no charge and receive a substantial weekly stipend. Students have the option of living in fully-furnished housing facilities within blocks of the DC metro line. If students choose not to live in Washington Center provided housing, the stipend is increased. All stipends are based on a 36 hour work week and payroll is distributed on the 15th and 30th of each month. The Washington Center is the official employer and must have the I-9 and W-4 tax forms on file. Direct deposit is available.

Part-Time Site Support Associate

“IMMEDIATE OPENING” FOR “Part-time Site Support Associate”

ESHMC is excited about being part of the University of Tennessee community and is interested in hiring a part-time site support associate to assist us at our new upscale student living community.

The person successfully filling this position will be a team oriented, flexible person who can solve problems quickly and to the satisfaction of the staff and residents at the Quarry Trails community and is willing to support technical and non-technical tasks. Anyone wanting to fill this position must be available to work beginning August 15th to support the move-in process, meet the team and become familiar with the work processes. During the move-in process (August 15th thru August 18th) the candidate will be expected to be available at least 8 hours per day.

Once move-in is completed the candidate will be required to support any number of technical and non-technical tasks at the direction of the Community Manager. NON-TECHNICAL tasks will include anything required by the Community Manager. Technical tasks are expected to be the majority of work time and will include supporting :

  1. Windows based PC's (including software updates, virus protection and removal, hardware, and troubleshooting)
  2. Computer Network and network devices including wireless router, copiers and printers
  3. Software (specifically MS excel and web outlook)
  4. Clubhouse Amenities (gate access controls, theatehr systems and security systems, camera's and DVR)

Qualifications/Requirements
  1. Student who is majoring in a computer related engineering or technical field
  2. Appropriate recommendations from UT faculty and staff
  3. Prior experience in a technical support role is a plus
  4. Excellent record in the completion of course work
  5. Successful prior work experience during school
  6. Ability to demonstrate that this work will not negatively impact school work
  7. Flexibility and ability to be on call to respond to support requests as needed
  8. Must be results oriented and responsive to the needs of the residents and the Community Manager.

Miami University; Project Dragonfly seeking Senior Web Programmer & Instructor

We seek a Senior Web Programmer interested in new learning platforms and new tools for community change. Project Dragonfly at Miami University reaches millions of people through its web, print, and television (http://www.DragonflyTV.org) media, as well as education programs in Africa, Asia, and the Americas (http://www.EarthExpeditions.org). The new hire will lead web development, instruct computer science students in projects related to Project Dragonfly, and serve as the tech lead for significant international programs (including a global field Master¹s degree program).

Project Dragonfly: Senior Web Programmer/Developer and Instructor. The senior lead works with a creative university team to develop web-based and multimedia environments that foster collaborative learning and civic engagement worldwide; liaise with web technology firms; develop/architect social networking tools and other applications that advance project goals; maintain and refine existing Dragonfly collaborative web platform; deploy/maintain Ruby on Rails applications in development, staging, and production Linux systems with Subversion and Capistrano; work closely with university IT staff; manage and instruct computer science students in a consulting environment; assist students with external contracts; negotiate project agreements; manage necessary resources.

Require: Bachelor¹s degree in Computer Science, MIS, or equivalent; strong web application development experience in JSP, LAMP, and/or RoR environments; logical/physical database development and design (MySQL, Oracle); HTML/CSS; familiarity with Macintosh environments, also PC and Linux environments; commitment to working in a team environment; outstanding oral/written communication and critical problem-solving skills; excellent management and organizational skills; attention to detail; willingness to develop new skills.

Desire: Master¹s degree in Computer Science, MIS, or equivalent; experience with Ruby on Rails, Rails application deployment and maintenance with Capistrano and Subversion; experience with management, project development, and Linux systems administration; experience working with learning environments (for example: virtual environments, social networks, data acquisition tools, games); interest in science, the environment, and civic engagement; desire to learn new skills in a university setting; graphic, video, and interactive content development.
