Scientific Programmer - ORNL

The Computational Astrophysics Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an immediate opening for a Scientific Programmer. The Computational Astrophysics group is mainly concerned with tera- and petascale simulations of stellar explosions and their associated effects. The group has computing allocations well in excess of 100 million cpu-hours per year distributed across half of the top 10 largest supercomputers in the world.

The successful applicant will work with our team of faculty and laboratory staff, along with graduate students and postdocs, on the maintenance and improvement of our suite of simulation codes. The preferred qualifications include:

  • an MS in computer science, or an MS in another technical field with a strong background in all of the following:
  • knowledge of Python is required; experience with C and C++ is expected; knowledge of Fortran is a major plus,
  • experience with web development and scripting,
  • previous experience in parallel computing is a plus:
    • MPI, OpenMP,
    • familiarity with batch computing environments is a major plus,
    • development tools, including gdb, valgrind, etc.,
  • knowledge of software engineering principles:
  • experience with version control is required; experience with regression testing is preferred,
  • a solid mathematical background is preferred, as is a strong interest in producing production-level software.

In addition, the successful applicant will have the ability to work independently on long and medium-term projects and as part of a team at times, especially while debugging. The ability to quickly and adeptly debug a large, complex code base is essential.

The initial appointment would be for 6 months, with appointment beyond the initial 6 months subject to a satisfactory evaluation. Beyond the initial period, the position is available for up to 3 years in the current instance, and could be extended pending the availability of funding.
